Pronghorn
American Antelope
(Antilocapra americana)
At one time is was estimate
their were as many antelope roaming
the western plains as bison. Within a fifty year span the numbers
of both animals dwindled to frightening small numbers. Pronghorns
are more closely related to sheep than the antelope of Africa
and
Asia. It inhabits the sagebrush desert of the west and can weigh
up to 125 pounds and stand 3 feet tall at the shoulder. It sheds
the outer sheath from its horns each fall. The pronghorn is the
fastest animal in the U.S. and sometimes runs besides automobiles
just for fun. With its wide angled vision and oversized heart
as
well as large windpipe they can run like the wind but only for
about
three miles and then they start to tire. Their average lifespan
is
almost fifteen years but it is not an animal you will see in most
zoo
settings for they need more freedom. They are a prized hunting
trophy and their meat is tender and sweet.
