Gray
Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus)
With
a name almost as long as this wonderful little fox one would expect
it to be fast and cunning. Instead, if frightened it will take
to ground in
a woodchuck's burrow or some other underground den, they do not
like to
run. It has another quality quite unique, it climbs trees and
sometimes
is called the tree fox. It can climb to escape predators or capture
birds
and raid nests. They live in the southwest and eastern part of
the U.S.
and are chiefly nocturnal. Their diet is small animals, insects,
reptiles,
fish, carrion, fruit, acorns, birds and their eggs. The gray fox
is slightly
smaller than the red fox and does not interbreed but does look
similar
during one of the red foxes color phases.
