Roosevelt Elk (Cervus canadensis roosevelti)
The
Roosevelt Elk is a large member of the deer family, the bulls can
sometimes weigh 1000 lbs. In the fall their rutting call is a
long hollow
whistle or bugle and can be heard many miles. They normally live
in high
mountain pastures but are also known to habitat ocean beaches
and coastal
woodlands. Elk or Wapiti,as they are known by the Indians, range
throughout
most of the western United States and western Canada. There are
scattered populations in other states and under a variety of subspecies
names. The
majestic set of antlers they carry has 6 tines at full maturity
and are called
a royal bull. Should they have 7 tines they are called imperial
bulls. Elk
normally have 1 calf but twins are not uncommon.Thousands of these
beautiful animals were killed solely to obtain the 2 upper canine
Elk
teeth also called whistler teeth. They were used for watch-fob's.
Today
they can be seen in very large numbers as they gather at a refuge
near
Jackson Hole,Wyoming to receive food during the snowy winter months.
