Bobcat ( Lynx
rufus )
Our American Bobcat lives throughout most of the United States
and Mexico.
Their size can vary from about two feet to as much as four feet
long and
weigh from 15 to 30 lbs. Like the mountain lion the bobcat will
live a solitary
life except at breeding time which is in late spring. As you may
have guessed
the bobcat received it's name because of the stub of a tail it
was born with.
It is equally at home in forest, mountain, swamp or desert areas
and it's
food can be anything from birds to small or weak deer. It has
no natural
predators and will live up to fifteen years in captivity. It seems
that their
size would make them a good canadate for domestication but they
are a very
violent animal. As naturalist John Audubon described a two week
old bobcat,
"It was a most spiteful, growling, and snappish little wretch"
The bobcat is mostly a nocturnal animal and seldom does one have
the pleasure
of a daylight sighting. They have learned to live close to man
and even though
we may not see them they can forage through our backyards at night
and
never leave a sign that they were there.
